Famous and Infamous: Rumours, Slander and Reputation in the Middle Ages

The Czech Academy of Sciences and the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities invite PhD students to apply for a five-day September School in Medieval Studies that will explore the phenomenon of good and bad reputation in the Middle Ages in a Central European context from the perspectives of political use, legal definitions and protections as well as religious polemic.

A New Order Permeates the World. Social Relevance and Spatial Impact of the Premonstratensians in Medieval Europe

International Conference, organised by the Academy Project St Mary at Helfta

A medieval illuminated manuscript depicts a bustling outdoor building site where labourers are constructing a church or a monastery. In the foreground, carpenters are working on wooden beams with tools, whilst a man in a monk’s habit gives instructions. In the centre, a labourer is transporting stones in a wooden wheelbarrow, another is chiselling stones with a pickaxe, and labourers on ramps are carrying loads upwards. A large wooden crane lifts stones onto the unfinished stone building. Above the scene, suspended in a white cloud, is a depiction of Jesus Christ on the cross, from which red cords or lines lead downwards towards the building site. 26th International Conference of the European Association for South Asian Archaeology and Art

From 16 to 20 September 2024, the 26th International Conference of the European Association for South Asian Archaeology and Art (EASAA) will take place in Leipzig – a first for Saxony – under the auspices of the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The conference has already been hosted by colleagues in Vienna, Paris, Stockholm and other cities, and was last held in Barcelona in 2022. About 170 to 200 participants from Europe, North America and Asia regularly attend.
