A medieval illuminated manuscript depicts a bustling outdoor building site where labourers are constructing a church or a monastery. In the foreground, carpenters are working on wooden beams with tools, whilst a man in a monk’s habit gives instructions. In the centre, a labourer is transporting stones in a wooden wheelbarrow, another is chiselling stones with a pickaxe, and labourers on ramps are carrying loads upwards. A large wooden crane lifts stones onto the unfinished stone building. Above the scene, suspended in a white cloud, is a depiction of Jesus Christ on the cross, from which red cords or lines lead downwards towards the building site. In the background, a hilly landscape stretches out with blue mountains beneath a bright sky.
