Presentation at the workshop “Practices of Global Commentary”, Toronto, 18-19 June 2026
Abstract:
The workshop was organized to discuss the future chapters in the Oxford Handbook of Global Commentary (Oxford University Press, forthcoming 2027). The handbook incorporates theoretical approaches to commentary, textual analyses, material culture, the role of commentary in communities and ritual, and case studies form different academic disciplines. The rubrics are: Commentary and Theory, Disciplining Commentary, Commentary and Communities, the Materiality of Commentary, Visuality and Ritual, and the Temporality of Commentary.
S. Brinkmann’s chapter on the commentary tradition of al-Baghawī’s hadith collection Maṣābīḥ al-sunna will shed light on the materiality of commentary by examining certain features of the commentary manuscripts.
